CHOOSING AN AGENCY

Choosing an agency to provide personal care services is a private and emotional issue.

We have provided a brief checklist of the most important questions that should be addressed in choosing a personal care/private duty agency:

The Checklist

  1. Is the agency accredited to provide high-quality personal care by JCAHO (Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) an independent accrediting organization?

  2. Is the agency's staff trained to care for elderly patients?

  3. Will a nurse evaluate/care for myself or my loved one?

  4. Will a nurse supervise caregivers?

  5. Does the agency perform criminal background checks on its employees?

  6. Are the agency's employees screened for health problems?

  7. Is a nurse available 24 hours a day, seven days a week?

  8. Is the agency staffed with employees, not just independent contractors?

  9. Are the employees covered by unemployment, worker's comp and payroll taxes?
